TAK ENSEMBLE | SEASON OPENER | OCTOBER 12, 2019

8:00 PM DIMENNA CENTER, BENZAQUEN HALL

TELEGRAMS

This program showcases TAK’s newest member, clarinetist Madison Greenstone, performing "Telegrams," an 18-minute work for solo bass clarinet and bluetooth speakers by Michelle Lou. Lou, one of our commissioned composers this season, will be programmed alongside works by Julien Malaussena (also a 2020 commissioned composer), Natacha Diels, George Aperghis, and Jessie Marino. From the sublimely odd to the hauntingly theatrical, this collection of works highlights the members of the ensemble both as individual virtuosi and as a collective.

"Marino’s unique combination of music, word, image, and absurd humor emphasized the TAK Ensemble’s commitment to questioning the rules of music and performance and their success in presenting it.” (I Care If You Listen, from the premiere of Marino’s Portrait of a Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling)

Program:

Georges Aperghis - Graffitis
Natacha Diels- Second Nightmare for Kiku
Julien Malaussena- (ËP) creap’ng
Michelle Lou - Telegrams
Jessie Marino - Portrait of a Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling

Tickets: suggested donation - $10-20

TAK is a quintet of that delivers energetic and virtuosic performance of “21st century chamber music that combines crystalline clarity with the disorienting turbulence of a sonic vortex.” (WIRE Magazine). The ambitious ensemble “impresses with the organicity of their sound, their dynamism and virtuosity — and, well, just a dash of IDGAF as they slay the thorniest material like it’s nothing” (New Sounds, WQXR). Dedicated to the commissioning of new works and direct collaboration with composers and other artists, TAK promotes ambitious programming at the highest level, fostering engagement within and outside of the music community.

TAK’s debut album Ecstatic Music: TAK plays Taylor Brook was released on New Focus Recordings in 2016 and was featured as Q2 Music’s Album of the Week by WQXR and listed in the Top 10 Classical Albums of 2016 by the Boston Globe, which praised the “young, fearless players…fluid grace and confidence.” Their second album, Sanctuary with Mario Diaz de Leon was released on Denovali Records. Their third album, Oor—with works by Natacha Diels, Tyshawn Sorey, Ann Cleare, Ashkan Behzadi, David Bird, and Erin Gee—was the inaugural release on their in-house label, TAK editions.

TAK ensemble is Laura Cocks / Madison Greenstone / Marina Kifferstein / Ellery Trafford / Charlotte Mundy with technical directors, David Bird and Taylor Brook
